Tip: Park at Paper Mill Lock for easy access to the towpath.

Step straight out of the lodge and into open Essex countryside. The footpaths around Little Waltham wind through wildflower meadows and hedgerows — ideal for an evening walk before dinner.

Tip: Best in spring and early summer when the wildflowers are in bloom.

A stunning 574-acre parkland with a beautifully restored Grade II* listed villa. Enjoy formal gardens, woodland walks, and regular events throughout the year — a wonderful afternoon out.

Essex's only city offers great shopping, a lively restaurant scene, and the excellent Chelmsford Museum. The high street has everything you need, and the train to London Liverpool Street takes under 35 minutes.

Tip: Park at the Meadows shopping centre for easy access to the city centre.

Rose & Crown, Great Waltham — an independent country pub renowned for its Sunday lunches. Galvin Green Man, Howe Street — award-winning dining for a special occasion.

Tip: The Rose & Crown Sunday lunch is particularly popular — book ahead.

Days Out

Colchester & Colchester Castle

Britain's oldest recorded town is well worth a day trip. Colchester Castle houses a fascinating museum, and the Dutch Quarter and High Street are full of independent shops and cafés.

Tip: Allow a full day — there's more to see than you'd expect.

Maldon & the Blackwater Estuary

A charming market town on the Blackwater Estuary, famous for its sea salt and traditional Thames sailing barges. The Hythe Quay is a lovely spot for a walk, and the town has excellent independent shops and restaurants.
